“From a young age I was always interested in creating…”. These are the words of the ambitious and innovative Stephanie Cassano, the creator of Stephanie Made This. For those of you that are not familiar with Stephanie’s Instagram page @stephaniemadethis, her biography describes her as a “Maker of things”.
Stephanie is talented in all things artistic; from creating clothing and accessories, to sketching and even taking photographs. I recently sat down with Stephanie, to find out more about her creative background.
When did you realise that you were passionate about creating new things, whether it be artworks, photographs, or garments?
From a young age, I would always find myself wanting to draw still life objects and portraits. Towards the end of primary school I was drawing the human figure quite well, and one day I decided to go even further and begin to draw garments. It was when my mother enrolled me into sewing classes that I began to see where this passion of mine could take me. As for photographs, when I was 14 my father bought my sister and I our first ever DLSR camera. This became our new love and obsession. We would see so many amazing and unique things that it became difficult not to snap a picture.
Is there someone or something that has always inspired you to be artistic?
I love exploring and discovering new and unique things. I like to analyse people, artworks, street art and architecture way too much. These are the things that inspire me on a day to day basis and are my main muse. I believe the best inspiration comes from experience and being in the present.
Who is ultimately your favourite designer and why?
My favourite designer would be the late Alexander McQueen. He had a drive and a talent to create something much more than just a beautiful garment. It is known that McQueen made his runway collections come to life – there was always a story to be told. The imagery, sounds and atmosphere of many of his runway shows could be described as ‘Scary and grotesque’ but also ‘Beautiful and pleasant’. He epitomises diversity – something I wish to employ in my designs, as Alexander McQueen did, and something his team continue to do.
What do you hope to achieve in the future?
I hope to study my Bachelor of Fashion at RMIT (Honours), which is a four-year course. Through this course I will have the potential to gain work experience, develop my skills more so and also make very valuable connections. Upon completion of this prestige course, I then want to travel with my knowledge of fashion and work for up and coming/established designers. If my experience, knowledge and imaginative spark are present, I would then like to return home to Australia and open my own fashion line. In the mean time I like to take advantage of my own creative freedom with my Instagram page @stephaniemadethis.
Tell me about your…
This is easy – green. It has always been my favourite colour as it is fresh, clean and reminds me of nature, which I love.
Stand by Me (1986) as it highlights the crazy, spontaneous adventures one would have as a child. River Phoenix also plays the main character of Chris Chambers, so what is not to love.
A quote that resonates with you is…
“To be unforgettable” or “To be remembered”. I am pretty big on direction in life and achieving what you wish to achieve no matter how ridiculous or challenging. I believe everyone wants to be remembered a certain way.
Artists on your iPod include…
This cannot be answered easily. I love old school music like The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Guns and Roses, Powder Finger and even some Celine Dion. Lately I am loving bands like Coldplay, Mumford and Sons, Woodlock, Arctic Monkeys and Monsters of Men. I am a sucker when it comes to rustic and folk music. In terms of solo artists, I am forever listening to Chet Faker, Hozier and Thirsty Merc. On the flip-side, I also love A$AP Rocky, Queen B, Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
